Today in Montalegre, Portugal, the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy officially got underway.
Jēkabpils native Reinis Nitišs is among the competitors in the Supercar class, and, representing Münnich Motorsport, is currently in eleventh place after two qualifying rounds. Two more qualifying rounds, as well as the semi-finals and final, will take place tomorrow.
The first race day in Portugal began with heavy rain, making the driving conditions that much more difficult for the drivers. In addition to battling other competitors, the drivers also had to fight with muddy conditions, which made for some exciting moments for Reinis Nitišs and others.
Reinis Nitišs set the tenth fastest time in the first qualifying and was twelfth in the second one.
“The weather conditions were not great today, with the rain making the track extremely slippery – I made a mistake in the first race, resulting in a slide and me brushing the track barrier.
However, it was great to be back in the race car to battle other top drivers – such as Solberg, Hansen, and Baumanis. I would like to thank all my fans and supporters – Lattelecom, Ošukalns, and Sonora, who have given me a fantastic opportunity to take part in world championship!
Neither of the qualifying runs was ideal – I made a few mistakes here and there, and lost some time in battles with other drivers on track. We’ll do an in-depth data analysis tonight to improve the pace for tomorrow’s qualifying, and I really hope we will be able to move on to the semi-finals!” say
Reinis Nitišs after day one.
