|Reinis Nitišs concludes FIA World Rallycross Championship season with a semi-final in Argentina|
The 2016 season of FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy concluded in Argentina on Sunday.
Jēkabpils native Reinis Nitišs competed in an Olsbergs MSE prepared car and was sixth after qualifying, advancing to the semi-final. There, after a lot of contact in the first corner, Nitišs had to settle for sixth place. He concluded World RX of Argentina in tenth position.
Rosario had a lot of rain on Saturday, resulting in some changes to the event itinerary – three qualifying heats, as well as the semi-finals and the final, would now take place on Sunday. Reinis set the eleventh, seventh, seventh, and tenth quickest times in the four qualifying rounds, which put him sixth overall heading into the semi-finals.
Nitišs began his semi-final from third position and managed to move up a spot before the first corner. Unfortunately, there was a lot of contact between all drivers, with the Jēkabpils native being pushed way off the track. By getting back on the track according to the rules, as opposed to choosing the straightest path, Nitišs lost a lot of time and dropped down to sixth position. Even though he set quick times for the remainder of the semi-final, it was not possible to regain the lost time and catch other drivers.
“This was quite an eventful race – hot weather on Saturday morning, followed by heavy rain during the day, resulting in a change of the event itinerary. I made a few mistakes, but we handled everything well, showed respectable pace and managed to qualify for a second row in the semi-final. There, I had a good launch, but, unfortunately, was in the wrong place at the wrong time in the first corner. I knew that our pace was good enough to get to the final, but the unlucky turn of events left us way behind the other drivers. While the final result might not be as good as hoped, it is more important to look at my pace throughout the weekend, which shows in the timing sheets.
Thank you all for the support and kind words throughout the season! This definitely was not an easy year for me, but the lessons learned and experience gained have made it possible to take a few steps forward in my development as a driver. We now have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks to find a competitive car for next year so that I can delight my supporters and fans with better results in the 2017 season! See you at the track!” says Reinis Nitišs after the season.
Meanwhile, the other Latvian driver, Jānis Baumanis, also qualified for the semi- final (he was eleventh after qualifying), but also ran into trouble in the first corner of his semi-final race, damaging his left rear wheel and having to retire before reaching the finish.
